Balee Watson

Instrument: Drum Major

Years in band: 6

Favorite band camp memory:
Two of my personal favorites were when Shawn got violated by the dog and when Greg fell asleep on the toilet. but the dances that Mr. Aylsworth and Jermaine do to the shows are pretty funny also.

Most inspirational staff member and person:
Well I'm sure it's pretty much the same for everyone. John is the one staff member that inspires me the most.

Why:
No matter how bad or depressing things get for me sometimes I always remember that John has been through so much more. I just remember until I have been through that I have no room to complain about my life at all. John has had a very rewarding life. He never gave up on himself even when other people did.

One thing you will always remember about band:
I will always remember all my friends I have had through my six years in band. I will always remember how much pride I had in leading a band so great.

Personal Comment:
I just want to thank everyone that never gave up on me and when I didn't really believe in myself. Sometimes it gets rough and I feel like I let people down but there are staff and members of the band that have kept me going and kept me believing that I have done the absolute best that I could.

A.J. Apple

Instrument: Alto Saxophone

Years in Band: 5

Favorite band camp memory:
Mr. Aylsworth's judge's tapes, Greg falling asleep on the toilet, people running into the pole (on the old practice field), Jermaine and Beavis singing the Backstreet Boys, Balee hitting herself in the face with the drumstick, Jermaine's cartwheels, Goron's graceful fall, Nick Snider's first time marching tenors, hearing the story of Jermaine mooning the cop along with Beavis' impression of Curly, Shawn and the dog, Tyler being nervous over his one-note, eight-count solo, Hallie falling down, Seth being Seth, marking time for B during awards, Mr. Aylsworth doing the Jazz run, Cherish getting on to Seth, Cody tripping over the bass drum, Shane counting over the whole band by himself, Dr. Haworth marching my spot in drill and basics, pixie sticks with Balee and Seth, and when Mr. Aylsworth said something like "Okay, now we're going to see what Hallie's solo sounds like with all three firsts."

Most inspirational staff member and person:
John Aylsworth is one of the most inspirational people in my life. He is always positive and comes to band unless sick (sometimes he shows up more than some of the members!). Above all of that, he has Muscular Dystrophy and wasn't expected to live past the age of 16 (he is now 60); which is enough to be inspirational by itself.

One thing you will always remember about band:
One thing I will always remember about band is the skills that I have learned that are needed to be successful in life.

Personal Comment:
It is better to be an over-achiever than achieve nothing at all.

Hallie Conrad

Instrument: Trumpet

Years in band: 5

Favorite band camp memory:
All the times I have fallen down, Balee hitting herself in the head with the drumstick, Shawn and his doggy friend, B Hagen saying mark time mark instead of band ten hut at districts in 2004, Aidan telling Seth that Seth is a girl, and Kapp singing the sax solo.

Most inspirational Staff member and person:
I choose John Aylsworth for both. Of all the people I have met over my five years in band nobody has touched me like John has. He never gives up. A man who was supposed to die at 16...and there he is, out there everyday just like us working hard to make us live up to our potential. I admire his strength and his stamina. Whenever I feel like I just can't go on, all I have to do is look at John and I stand a little taller and work a little harder than I was before. He has been my inspiration and my mentor. I hope I can grow to be as great a person as him.

One thing you will always remember about band:
I will always remember the life skills I have learned. Self discipline, tolerance, work ethic, good sportsmanship (or bandsmanship hehe), leadership, and doing what I have to do even if I don't want to.

Personal Comment:
I am so proud, more than I can say, to be a part of the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade. The band and all the people in it have been like family to me since day one of my rookie year back in 2002. I never would have thought that a group of people who are so different could ever become so close. We have accomplished so much in the past 5-6 years. It's amazing. My charge to the underclassmen: Keep the tradition alive, keep working hard, and never give up.

Favorite band camp memory:
Goron losing his pants, Balee clocking herself in the face with a drum stick, Coolhand's unforgettable impressions. Oh yeah, Shawn and the dog!

Most inspirational Staff member and person:
John Aylsworth and Balee. John has overcome the impossible. John will always be an inspiration and a really good reason to pull yourself out of bed in the morning when you think, "I don't want to get up."

Balee because she has pushed me harder than anyone I know. She has made me believe that there are better things out there than a mediocre life working in a dead end job. Balee makes me want to try harder than anyone else.

One thing you will always remember about band:
The self-discipline and all of the good friends and musicians I've met. AJ, Kapp, Hallie, Tyler, Whitney, and Troy. I love you all dearly. Oh and all the water breaks on Balee's podium.

Personal Comment:
I love you AJ, Balee, Hals, Whit, Troy, Lynley, Nickolicious. It's not over until I start singing, because when I start singing, no one will have the hearing capacity to use their musical abilities again.

One thing you will always remember about band:
The feeling after band camp. The sense of accomplishment and pride that another season has began.
