Brigade Doubly Successful in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – Dodging raindrops in Indianapolis, the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade swept both ends of their double-header at Avon and Greenwood this weekend.

In their Saturday opener, the Brigade was at the Meijer Avon Invitational. They won class D competition as well as picking up caption awards for music, visual, general effect, percussion, auxiliary, and drum major. Their score was the best of both Class C and D at Avon.

The nightcap was at the Greenwood Meijer Invitational. The Brigade again took first place in Class D winning caption awards for music, visual, general effect, percussion, and auxiliary. Just like Avon, the Brigade’s score was the highest among both Class C and D.

“Each show had good qualities,” said Director of Bands Luke Aylsworth. “The morning show was by far a better visual performance. The field was a turf field and the moisture from the rain was not a factor. However, musically we were a little off (probably due to the early performance time).”

Field conditions at Greenwood were a little sloppy because of rain and the Woodmen football team had a game the night before. “At Greenwood, the kids really played well. However, the field was in bad condition. They really had to be careful about their surroundings. They managed to stay professional and perform a great show in adverse conditions,” added Aylsworth.

Regardless of the weather, both Avon and Greenwood host two of the finest contest in state. “Avon and Greenwood should be very proud of their contests, said Aylsworth. “These are outstanding facilities for a performance. I know it is a long way to travel, but the venue, judging panel, and level of competition is outstanding.”

Now attention turns to the first round of Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) state competition. The Brigade will perform at Jasper’s Alumni Stadium at 11:13 am in Class D. To advance, the Brigade must score above a pre-established threshold.

The Brigade will also be performing two other times this weekend including at the football game Friday as well as in the Great Pumpkin Parade on Sunday.

This week, the Blackhawk Brigade remained atop the Indiana Marching.com Writers Poll. This is the third consecutive week Springs Valley has been atop the poll. Paoli remained sixth again this week while Orleans held firm at eighth.

Scheduling Change: The Blackhawk Brigade has changed their schedule on October 10. Instead of going to Salem, Springs Valley will head to the Cavalcade of Champions Contest at Center Grove HS in Greenwood. "The main reason is due to field conditions and judging panel," added Aylsworth. Center Grove is equipped with field turf and will have a panel of judges from BOA, ISSMA, and DCI.
