FRENCH LICK, Ind. – After marching band season concludes in October, most think that the life of band director calms down. That is not for the case of our own Luke Aylsworth.
Aylsworth is in his ninth year of teaching and eighth at Springs Valley. On top of leading a state and nationally ranked marching band program, concert band, pep band, and winter guard, Aylsworth feels that he needs to devote even more of his time to music.
In 2004, Aylsworth had his first percussion ensemble arrangement, March of the Dwarfs, published by Drop6Media, Inc. Soon there after, Tapspace Publications took on another of Aylsworth’s pieces. While arranging marching and percussion pieces has been the norm for Aylsworth, the two now national pieces have launched his hobby onto the national page.
Most recently, Countermotion hired Aylsworth as a percussion composer. "I was obviously excited about the chance to write music. It is something I love to do,” stated Aylsworth. “When I got the call from Countermotion, I was ecstatic.”
He was wrote five marching band shows in the last two months. “It is sometimes difficult to meet the quick deadlines. However, I manage to get them completed," added Aylsworth. All five are on a nationally released CD to band programs all around the country. All the shows are original compositions and Aylsworth wrote the percussion score.
Writing and arranging music is assisting Aylsworth in his current role as a music instructor. "I am learning a great deal that helps me in my job as a band director. I get to see and hear music much sooner and get a chance to meet and work with new composers and arrangers,” said Aylsworth.
Meeting new composers and arrangers has already paid off for Aylsworth and the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade. “Part of our 2010 show was music I found by working at Countermotion. So, it has been a great help in my daily job as well,” concluded Aylsworth.
On top of his work with Countermotion, he also works for eMotion Marching Innovations in Utah as well as owning his own business, Hober Reber Productions. |
