LYNNVILLE, Ind. – In a program with such a rich history, it can sometimes be hard to find something the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade has not accomplished. On April 9, the sixth grade band did just that.
The 60-member sixth grade band made the school’s first appearance at the ISSMA Festival for middle schools. Not only that, but the group received a gold rating for their Group V performance.
"I am really proud of our 6th grade students,” said Director of Bands Luke Aylsworth. “In a program like ours, it is hard to be the first to do something this big. These students were up to the challenge and did a great job."
The elementary band program has been structured in a way to introduce instruments and teach beginning level music. The program is now elevated to a program playing a much higher level of music at a state level contest. “Just a few years ago, we were barely able to get enough music together (in 6th grade) for the end of the year concert. Now, they are going to contests. It is great!” concluded Aylsworth.
The young group of musicians performed the following pieces at Tecumseh High School: Centurion, Beethoven's 9th, and The Argonauts.
