JASPER, Ind. – Although conditions were not ideal as the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade took the field on Saturday, they took care of business by earning their eighth consecutive gold rating and trip to regional.

Those conditions included a cold wind from the north and light rain. “It was a cold, windy, and rainy,” said Drum Major Nia Seitz. “But we pushed through it and had a great performance.”

Director of Bands Luke Aylsworth could not have agreed more with Seitz. “I was very proud of our students, staff, parents, and fans. The rain and cold made for very adverse conditions. It was not easy performing under those conditions. However, our students managed to perform a very exciting and spirited show.”

Along with picking up a gold rating, the Brigade also won best music and marching.  The music category is becoming to be a strong point for the Brigade.  To be the best at the Jasper District is a big accomplishment for the group.

“This was the third year in a row we have won overall best music at the Jasper District,” added Aylsworth. “This site (Jasper) is one of the most competitive District sites in the state. It is an honor to receive that acknowledgment three consecutive years.

The Brigade will have one final week to perfect their show before they head to the Evansville Central Southern Regional.  In their prelude to regional, they will head to Greenwood to perform in the Cavalcade of Champions at Center Grove High School.

Performing in Class D, the Brigade will perform at 3:52pm.  For marching band enthusiast, this will be a contest for the ages.  Between the four classes, there are 28 bands performing.  Of the 28, 15 are ranked in the top 15 in their class including top ranked Avon from Class A, the top three ranked Class B bands in Jasper, Greenwood, and Northview, the top two bands in Class C in Norwell and Edgewood, and Springs Valley, ranked second this week in Class D.

Lewis Cass remains strong atop the Class D Writers Poll.  As mentioned, Springs Valley is up to second while Forest Park drops to third.  Paoli is back in fourth while Orleans is up a spot to seventh.
