FRENCH LICK, Indiana – The Springs
Valley Blackhawk Brigade ended their annual band camp with
great success and high expectations as the look towards
the upcoming marching season.
Director of Bands Luke Aylsworth is beginning
his seventh season at Springs Valley and looks to improve
on the bands success of last season.
Last season, the Blackhawk Brigade made
their first voyage back to the RCA Dome and the Indiana
State School Music Association (ISSMA) state finals in 12
years. The Brigade returned home with a fourth place finish.
Lewis Cass from Walton, Indiana won the state crown.
Springs Valley’s 2007 is titled “3
Generations.” The show ties in the three generations
of families that have marched in the Brigade. Each movement,
uniquely titled “Grandparents,” “Parents,”
and “Children” was composed by John M. Meehan
and Key Poulan. The title also reflects on the three generations
of band directors at Springs Valley. Aylsworth has followed
in the footsteps of his father, John, who still assist on
staff, and his grandfather Gilbert.
This year’s Brigade will be lead on the podium by
drum majors Kaiti Wilson and Elise McElroy. They will be
assisted during the show by Kelly Hutslar and Morgan Elmore.
This marks the first time since 2000 that the Brigade will
have more than one drum major. “I have a strong feeling
we will have an awesome year,” stated Wilson. “We
want to make the bands who got us here proud.”
The Brigade will kick their 2007 marching
season at the Heritage Hills Invitational in Lincoln City,
Ind. on September 8.
