ROCKPORT, Ind. – In the final regular season contest of the year, the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade won the Class “D” competition at the South Spencer Invitational on Saturday night.
The Brigade also won awards for best percussion and auxiliary. This is the third time this season the percussion has been named best percussion and the fourth such time the auxiliary has won the overall award.
“The color guard deserves a special pat on the back. These girls are very young. Our oldest members in the color guard are two sophomores. Add to that a large group of first year members and you have a very inexperienced color guard section,” said Director of bands Luke Aylsworth.
The color guard entered the season, down for members from graduation. All season, it seems the color guard has steadily improved to maintain their status as one of the best guards in Indiana. “It amazes me that they went the season undefeated in the guard caption. That is a testament to their hard work and dedication and that of their instructor Laura Aylsworth,” added Luke.
Springs Valley now looks towards the ISSMA South Regional in Jeffersonville this upcoming weekend. The Brigade looks to advance to the Franklin Semi-State, held on October 15. Performance time for Springs Valley is 11:00am. To advance to semi-state, the band must place in the top 10 of the 17 performing bands.
“We really need a great deal of crowd support at the Regional competition in Jeffersonville this weekend. The students get really motivated to perform in front of a large crowd. We have to perform first that day and the crowd tends to be smaller at that time of the day. We would appreciate our community and supporters to send as many fans to support us as possible. We hope to see everyone there at 11:00 a.m.,” Aylsworth stated.
In the weekly Indiana Marching.com Writers Poll, released Monday night, Springs Valley found themselves atop the Class “D” polls. This marks the first time in Writers Poll history that the Brigade is ranked number one in the state. They are also number one in the Class “D” South Region poll.
