TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – The Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade took home the honors of being a State Finalist for the eighteenth time in school history at the ISSMA South Regional at Indiana State University this past weekend.

The Blackhawk Brigade will be joined by Mater Dei, Paoli, North Posey, and Forest Park from the South Region and Tri-West, Triton Central, Pioneer, Lewis Cass, and Eastern (Greentown) from the north. Lewis Cass is the defending class “D” champion.

Springs Valley continues to improve each week with the guidance of Director of Bands Luke Aylsworth. “I really feel we have been successful with the goal and the mission set forth by the 2001 band (Aylsworth’s first season as director),” said Aylsworth. “I asked that band in 2001 to make a U-turn and to direct our program on a path of restoration and excellence. I challenged each band over the last seven years to make each performance and every season better than the one before.. We have been successful and excited that we have achieved our goal.” This marks the second year in a row that Aylsworth has led the Brigade to the state finals.

This year, the ISSMA State Finals are holding their state finals for the last time in the RCA Dome. Next season, the finals will be moved to Lucas Oil Stadium, the new home of the Indianapolis Colts located just south on the RCA Dome. The eighteenth trip to state finals marks the highest of any program at Springs Valley.

The RCA Dome began hosting the state finals in 1984. The Brigade was one of the first bands to perform at the first finals at the RCA Dome and now one of the last. “I can remember the very first trip Springs Valley made to the Hoosier Dome (changed to the RCA Dome in 1995),” mentioned Aylsworth. “In 1984, I was seven years old and I can remember sitting in the stands and think about neat it was to see my dad on the big video screen. It’s really special to me to have the chance to be out there with him one more time before we make the move over to Lucas Oil Stadium.” The RCA Dome is slated for demolition in 2008.

Springs Valley will take to the field at 6:07pm. Springs Valley will be the final band performing in Class “D.” Class “D” competition begins at 4:00pm following Class “C.” Fans are encouraged to get to the RCA Dome early and find premiere seating before the start of Class “D” competition. Tickets are available at the Springs Valley High School office from 7:30 – 4:30pm. They are also available at the ticket office at the RCA Dome and on Ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $13.00.
