| Pride
of Paoli - Blackhawk Brigade State Finals salute displays
Orange County sportsmanship
Letter to the Editor from the Springs Valley Herald (10/24)
Dear Editor,
I would like to share an event that occurred at the RCA
Dome during the Marching Band State Finals on Saturday,
Oct. 20. This even moved many in the audience to tears and
symbolizes one of the things that makes Orange County great.
The Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade competed
along with the Pride of Paoli for the title of Class D State
Champion. Paoli finished sixth; Springs Valley finished
as state runner-up.
At the conclusion of the awards ceremony,
the finalist were dismissed in reverse order. They marched
off the field past the remaining bands, and out of the Dome.
When the Pride of Paoli was announced, the Blackhawk Brigade
applauded from their position on the field and did not stop.
When the Pride of Paoli marched by the Blackhawk Brigade,
they stopped, turned to face the Brigade, and applauded
them as well.
It was very moving watching them applaud
one another. They crowd applauded even louder in response
to the support shown by these two bands. There was a pause
in the program as the applause continued.
These two bands honored one another and
together shared in the victory of having not one, but two
bands representing Orange County.
We can be proud of these young people and
the character they displayed.
Thank you, Blackhawk Brigade and Pride
of Paoli for your sportsmanship and character. You represented
Orange County well. May you experience even greater victories
in the future both on and off the field.
We're all proud of you!
Sincerely,
Shelly McElroy
Mother of Ben & Elise McElroy
of the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade
