FRENCH LICK, Indiana – The Springs
Valley Blackhawk Brigade officially opened the season this
weekend at Charlestown and Paoli. They came home victorious
at both contests including the title of “Grand Champion”
at the Charlestown contest.
“It was great to get a contest in
this weekend,” stated Springs Valley Director of Bands
Luke Aylsworth. “I really feel our students have a
good understanding of what it takes to perform well. They
are experienced, motivated and determined to make each performance
better than the one before."
The Brigade participated in the Southern
Indiana Marching Festival contest at Charlestown High school.
Sloppy field conditions did not hamper the Brigade as they
came away with first place in Class AA competition and named
Grand Champion of the show. This means the Brigade had the
highest combined score of all the bands at the contest in
all classes.
At Paoli, it was a homecoming for the Brigade
as it’s the closest the Brigade will perform to home.
With this in mind, Springs Valley went out and gave the
crowd what they wanted and to their delight, was awarded
1st Place in Class AA and won captions for best percussion,
music, and general effect.
This week the Brigade prepares for their
trip to Avon and Greenwood High Schools in Indianapolis.
"This should be a fun weekend. It is always fun to
perform and this weekend they get to perform twice,”
stated Aylsworth. “We seem to improve and grow after
every performance. Both contests have great facilities and
should make for a very fun weekend."
Springs Valley opens the morning at the
Avon Meijer Invitational in Class D competition at 10:34am.
They will them travel southeast to the Meijer Greenwood
Invitational where they will again compete in Class D with
a performance time at 4:39pm.
This past Monday, the Brigade was ranked
second in the state in Class D by the weekly Indiana Marching.com
Writer’s Poll. Springs Valley moves back up to second
after spending last week at fourth. Top honors belong to
Lewis Cass, last year’s Class D state champion. Rounding
out the top five includes Paoli at third, Forest Park at
fourth and Tri-West fifth.
