FRENCH LICK, Indiana - Friday Nights in Indiana are reserved for high school football. But, on Saturdays, marching bands take over. Starting this weekend, all three local bands take to the field, working towards a spot at October’s ISSMA State Finals.

Springs Valley, in their seventh season under the direction of Luke Aylsworth, heads into the season enjoying the label of State Finalist. Last season, the Brigade placed 4th at the ISSMA State Finals. “Obviously, last year was a special year,” stated Aylsworth. “It is always very rewarding to be able to call yourself a state finalist. We were thrilled to death to represent Springs Valley and Orange County at State Finals and really feel it has pushed us to a higher level of performance. We feel we are even better this season. So many years, our goal was to make state finals. Now, we turn our attention to staying a state finalist and continuing to develop our student musicians while creating a great musical visual package.”

Springs Valley’s 2007 program is titled “3 Generations.” It is an original show concept with music from John Meehan and Key Poulan. The show re-visits the three generations of the Blackhawk Brigade program. Each piece is uniquely titled “Grandparents,” “Parents,” and “Children.” The Brigade’s 80 members all have ties back through the generations of the program.

Springs Valley opens their season with a community show at the Springs Valley High School football stadium on Saturday at 3:30pm. Following their local show, they will head to Lincoln City, Indiana to compete in the annual Heritage Hills Invitational. Their show time is at 9:18pm EST.

Around the county, the Pride of Paoli looks to rebound back into the state picture with their show “Echoes of Pride” with music by Richard Saucedo and Samuel Hazo. The 71 member band will begin their season Saturday at North Harrison and then travel to the Corydon for a night show. Paoli is under the direction of Bill Laughlin who is entering his 20th season leading the Pride.

In northern Orange County is the Orleans Bulldog Regiment, 60 members strong, under the direction of Terry Burton. Burton is entering his fifth season at Orleans. The Bulldog Regiment’s 2007 show is titled “X!” by Key Poulan. They will host their annual Ice Cream social Friday night at 6:00pm before starting their season at North Harrison Saturday morning and Heritage Hills that night. They will be in the same class as Springs Valley.

All three local bands look to content for the five spot to the ISSMA State Finals at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, IN on October 20. This year will be the final time the State Finals are held in the RCA Dome. Next season (2008), Lucas Oil Stadium will host not only the ISSMA State Finals, but the Bands Of America Grand National Championship, and Drum Corp International World Championship.
